The Longest Night

The Salzburg Team Porsche 917 LH of
Vic Elford/Kurt Ahrens is depicted battling the similar Martini Racing "Long Tail" of Gerard Larrousse/Willy Kauhsen at dusk in what was the wettest Le Mans for many years. Although leading the race and with Vic Elford becoming the first driver ever at an average of over 150 mph at the Sarthe, the white unforgiving "Long Heck" was eventually forced into retirement.
The #3 car eventually finished in second position behind the winning 917K of Richard Attwood and Hans Herrmann shown in the study to the left. Portrayed in the right hand study is the thrid placed, class winning Porsche 908 of Rudi Lins and Helmut Marko.

The return of Mercedes to Grand Prix racing at the French Grand Prix in 1954 caused a sensation. Two of their cars, under the control of Alfred Neubauer took the first two places.
The eventual winner, Juan Fangio, is shown leading his team mate Karl Kling who is overtaking the Ferrari 553 Squalo of Jose Gonzales. In the background, the third Mercedes car of Hans Herrmann negotiates the Thillois corner. Rheims 4th July 1954
